Most people don’t understand how computers work or know how to harness computing to solve problems, which limits their personal use. Computers are mainly communication tools to them since the advent of social media platforms and mobile computing devices, but generative AI has the power to change that. Even those without computer skills can create or discover things using ChatGPT and Claude that were previously impossible. That being said, while impressive, generative AI’s current capabilities are often overhyped, leading to unrealistic expectations.

AI is more akin to the Industrial Revolution than a passing trend. I believe it will accomplish what steam power did in the 19th century: fundamentally reshape how we work and live. I’m optimistic about this transformative technology. Yet I remain uncertain about its underlying mechanics, and I’m concerned about the societal upheaval it will bring. The Industrial Revolution created immense wealth but also displaced workers and disrupted communities. We’re likely to face similar challenges with AI, and managing that transition may prove harder than the technology itself.
