Master Reference
Philosophy: Minimal, purposeful gear. Tone from fingers, pick, guitar, and amp — digital effects complement, not replace.
Core Philosophy
The goal is an honest mirror of playing: tone, dynamics, timing, and transient response captured without layers of processing that smooth over the exact inconsistencies worth noticing.
- Physical signal chain is primary: guitar → pick → amp. Effects enhance but do not replace.
- Small adjustments compound: microphone placement, pick gauge, amp master-before-volume — these matter as much as EQ or pedal settings.
- Avoid stacking same-effect sources: one reverb source, one tremolo source, one modulation source per patch. No redundancy.
- Processing hierarchy: corrective (levels, clipping fixes) is fine; stylistic shaping (compression, EQ rebalancing) happens at the source, not after recording.
Amplifier — Fender Blues Junior III
Role: Primary tone source. All recordings run through this amp and its onboard spring reverb.

Baseline Settings — Clean-to-Slight-Breakup Tone
Control range: 1–12 (no true zero). Use Master before Volume for natural tube compression and sag.

Adjustment logic:
- Thin/nasal tone → check Middle first, before anything else.
- Tone lacks depth → raise Master before raising Volume.
- Guitar-specific tweaks from baseline:
- Tele (bright pickups): Drop Treble to 4.5.
- Strat (Vintage Noiseless): Baseline works as-is; these pickups are balanced.
- Les Paul (490R/498T): Raise Treble to 5.5 to keep humbucker note definition clear.
Microphone — Blue Yeti USB (Cardioid Mode)
Role: Capture the amplifier’s actual tone into the recording chain.

Standard Amplifier Position
- Distance: 4–5 inches from speaker grille (start at 4.5”, adjust by ear)
- Horizontal offset: ~2” right of amplifier’s centreline (creates true off-axis angle since stand doesn’t swivel)
- Vertical tilt: Forward tilt so capsule aligns with speaker cone (compensates for low desktop-stand height)
- Mode: Cardioid (never Omnidirectional for amp recording — captures excessive room reflections and hum)
- Gain setting reference: −9 dB midpoint of −12 to −6 dB target range; re-check against tremolo swells (loudest transient) each session
Log per session: actual gain value used, and whether the source was clean or had tremolo/boost engaged (affects headroom needs).
Guitars
All guitars use nickel-plated steel strings (0.009–0.042 gauges). Pick gauge is a deliberate tone variable.

Pick pairing principle: Match the pick to the guitar’s natural voicing rather than doubling up. Bright guitar + thicker pick = warmth. Dark guitar + thinner pick = articulation.
Effects Chain
JOYO JF-09 Tremolo Pedal
Role: Default tremolo source when needed.

Baseline settings:
- Rate: 9–11 o’clock (slower = ambient, faster = rhythmic pulse)

Rule: Use JOYO for hardware-based warmth and
smoothness. Skip if the patch needs tremolo synced/tempo-locked with
other Zoom effects (use Zoom’s tremolo with SQR waveform
instead).

Role: Modulation, non-spring reverbs, boost, and compression. No amp/cab simulation (Blues Junior provides that).

Signal Chain Principles
- Maximum 7 simultaneous effects (chain in any order, but keep it simple).
- Avoid redundancy: if an effect already exists in hardware (amp reverb, JOYO tremolo), skip the digital version unless you need a specific texture the hardware can’t provide.
- No amp/cab simulation blocks — this is a hard rule. The Blues Junior and Eminence speaker provide the amplifier tone.

Zoom Reverb Algorithms — Which to Use
Non-spring algorithms are genuine textures:

Recording Workflow
QuickTime Player — Recording Quality Tiers

Standard practice: ProRes 422 + Linear PCM for any take you’re keeping. The Blue Yeti’s 48 kHz USB signal downsamples cleanly to 44.1 kHz in this format, preserving transient response and dynamics.
iMovie — Editing Workbench Model
Treat iMovie as a workbench, not an archive.
- Library holds templates only (titles, presets) — nothing else lives here long-term.
- Start a new video by duplicating the template project.
- Drag in the clip, crop, apply Enhance if needed (light, 20–30% noise reduction only), add titles.
- Export: File → Share → File → High (or Custom) → Better
Quality. Output is
.mp4. - Delete the project once export plays back correctly (video, audio, titles all present).
- Periodically run iMovie → Settings → Delete to clear leftover render files.
File naming convention:
Guitar_Practice_[Date]_[Focus].mp4
Important: iMovie export re-encodes audio to lossy format. Retain the original QuickTime ProRes file as your lossless archive.
Audio Correction (if needed)
- iMovie Enhance: Fine for basic volume leveling and light noise cleanup.
- GarageBand: Use instead when precise corrective work is needed (matching levels between mics, fixing clipping). Import video, adjust audio, export audio back to video. Skip iMovie’s audio tweaking entirely in this case.
- Avoid shaping in post: Compression, EQ, reverb, effects belong at the source (amp/pedal chain), not after recording. Post-processing is corrective only.

Patch creation principle: Start with an existing patch, make relative adjustments (“a bit brighter,” “less reverb”), and log what changed and why. This avoids re-deriving settings from scratch each time.

Troubleshooting Decision Tree
Problem: Tone sounds thin or nasal
- First move: Check Middle control — raise from 3.5 to 4.5–5. This is your most common trap on Fender tone stacks; never skip this as a first check.
- If still thin: Raise Treble slightly (half step, e.g., 5 → 5.5) OR try a thicker pick (1.5mm instead of 0.73mm).
- Last resort: Raise Master before raising Volume — natural tube compression can thicken tone.
Problem: Tone lacks depth or sounds “papery”
- Raise Master before raising Volume — this is where tube sag comes from.
- Check Reverb setting — even 2–3 adds room presence; raise to 3–4 if ambience is needed.
- Review mic distance — if recording, try moving mic 0.5” closer to grille (from 4.5” to 4”).
Problem: Recording captures too much room noise or hum
- Check Blue Yeti mode — must be Cardioid. Omnidirectional picks up far-field hum and reflections.
- Check mic orientation — logo should face the amplifier (side-address mic). Backward placement means poor off-axis rejection.
- Check gain setting — if too high (e.g., −3 dB), headroom is low and noise floor rises. Set to −9 dB default, re-check against tremolo swells.
Problem: Tremolo sounds muddy or disconnected
- If using JOYO: Check Intensity — if too high, effect dominates. Drop to 10 o’clock or lower.
- If using Zoom tremolo: Check waveform — if using TUBE or TRI, you’re duplicating JOYO territory. Switch to SQR for a different texture (chop/stutter).
- Reverb stacking: Check that only one reverb source is active. If both amp reverb and Zoom reverb are on, they may clash.
Problem: Pickup sounds too bright (especially Les Paul or Jaguar)
- Try thinner pick (0.73mm instead of 1.5mm) — reduces top-end snap at the source.
- If using Zoom patch: check Treble on amp — lower from 5 to 4.5.
- Last resort: Light Equalization on Zoom (subtle high-end roll-off, not aggressive).
Problem: Pickup sounds too dark or muddy
- Try thicker pick (1.5mm instead of 0.73mm) — increases articulation.
- Check Middle control — if above 4.5, lower it first before raising Treble.
- If using Zoom patch: Check Treble — raise from 5 to 5.5.
- Check Reverb — if above 3, lower it slightly; excessive reverb can blur attack.

Mezzanine-quality recording for keeper takes. ProRes 422 + Linear PCM preserves transient response and dynamics. The original QuickTime file is your lossless archive; iMovie exports are delivery copies.
Pick gauge is a deliberate tone variable. Don’t dismiss it as an afterthought. A thicker pick warms a bright guitar; a thinner pick adds articulation to a dark one.
When in doubt, check Middle first. On Fender tone stacks, a conservative Middle is the default. Thin tone? Raise Middle, not Treble.
