Honne and tatemae arenβt simply truth versus lie. Theyβre both real, but at different levels. Tatemae is socially acceptable, while honne is the unfiltered truth that emerges when you trust someone. Neither is fake.
Tatemae serves a practical purpose: it facilitates social cohesion and allows groups to function effectively without friction. Honne represents the underlying reality, often reserved for those you trust deeply enough to let your guard down.
