Murakami’s latest novel, “The Tale of Kaho,” was released on July 3, 2026, by Shichosha. It’s his 16th novel and marks his first in three years since “The City and Its Uncertain Walls” (Murakami, 2024). “The Tale of Kaho” expands on four interconnected short stories that were first serialized in the Japanese magazine Shincho, beginning in 2024. Only the first story, “Kaho,” has been translated into English by Philip Gabriel for The New Yorker.
In an interview, Murakami discussed his health.
I don’t want to go into details. I lost 17 kilograms and could barely walk. I thought I might never be able to write again.
Despite his age of 77, Murakami expressed a renewed passion for writing after his discharge, finding immense joy in the process. While acknowledging his uncertainty about his lifespan, he remains committed to his craft.
