Maruzen and Junkudo are bookstore chains with strong stationery sections. Itoya, by contrast, is a dedicated stationery institution in Ginza, known for its premium pens and paper. Kyukyodo specializes in traditional washi paper, brushes, and Japanese stationery. Haibara is an over 200-year-old shop that sells traditional Japanese paper goods. Kakimori offers bespoke notebooks and ink blending in Kuramae, Tokyo. Bungubox is a fountain pen and ink specialty shop, while Tools in Osaka is a cult favourite for pens and paper goods.

Maruzen in Nihombashi is one of my favourites. And it turns out Haibara is only a stone’s throw away from Maruzen.

Sekaido Shinjuku flagship store (near Shinjuku-Sanchome station) is a multi-floor store that’s something of a legend among artists, designers, and stationery fans.

Tokyu Hands offers creative tools, craft supplies, and quality stationery. Loft provides trendy lifestyle goods with a solid stationery section. Itoyokado/Ito-Yokado is a general superstore with a decent stationery section.
