Taking it for granted is something we try not to do; however, there is a hidden quality in it that we can pursue. When that hidden-by-design quality is possessed by the products we make, they disappear into use. Let us consider friction as an example. Where it is not desired, the object should move with ease, like a well-oiled machine; where it is desired, the object should struggle against it, like a tire with good traction.
When designing a component in a machine, building a feature in software, writing a book, or fingering a chord, aiming for that hidden quality as the outcome will make it sublime. Create with that outcome in mind. If others take it for granted, you have done your job.
