Note-book

It all began with a Telecaster and a Fender amplifier a while back. Learning to play this beautiful instrument was a constant struggle, but I kept playing the Tele.

One day I had enough courage to record my practice using a Mac. It was extremely difficult but allowed me to measure my progress. After that, I got serious and began studying music theory and blues. I learned the basics of music notation. Before too long, I was able to write rudimentary chord sequences. Around the same time, I stumbled upon an application called Tin Pan | Rhythm. With Rhythm, I created backing tracks to learn new chords. Those brief pieces sounded good to my ears, and I kept recording more tunes.

Then came the words… One early morning while writing an email, certain words began to pop into my head. That email prompted me to write some chords and make a backing track. I used the piano in GarageBand, and the tune seemed to go along with the words. I kept writing more words.

That’s how my note-book came to be, and I intend to maintain it as years go by. A few words of caution to the reader: This collection is a mere combination of my tunes diary and personal notes. Those expecting well-written music or any kind of lyrics, be forewarned, it’s not here. My emphasis is on making progress over seeking musical perfection. If you, however, happen to keep this book around, then welcome to the dark side!

A final note: I have as much difficulty as ever in playing this instrument; the Tele is still challenging, albeit more doable. I have a hunch that I’ll keep on keeping on…
